Subtitle Rant And Other Fun stuff.
Sep. 18th, 2015 08:40 pmSo, as those following me on other social media know, I've been watching Kiva. I've been enjoying Kiva. It's been a fun ride and it's actually gotten me hooked. Which is something I can't really say a lot about Inoue seasons (they tend to hook me much later).
However, I’m puttiing Kiva on the backburner until Swag Scrubs is finished. I’m normally fine with sitting through TVN but their Kiva subs are just..unbareable.
When making fancy fonts, please consider the readability. About 10% of the population has a dyslexia which may not seem much but considering there is about 7.5 billion people in the world...you're looking at a lot of people with reading disabilities.
And it's not just us. People need to be able to read this quickly. Subtitles are suppose to be read at the speed of the person speaking, if not slower at times. If someone with a reading disability is having major issues, imagine someone who doesn't have one. They're going to be doing what I and others do with readable subtitles: pause the damn show.
This is not a good font for readability. And this font+color is SO not good for that. Dear god, who decided that?
Look, I'm not going to get into the finer details of TVN's issues. Tons of people have made the case before me. Some of it is honestly more how people prefer their subtitles. But their Kiva subs are unreadable and actually made me stop watching the show. When your subtitle fonts are the reason why someone stops watching a show, that's a big issue.
Kiva's already been subbed but let it be something to keep in mind for future fan sub works from any group:
