Thoughts of Sakugoe
Sep. 26th, 2015 11:37 amSakugoe was a very interesting watch and I’m still swimming in thoughts about it.
Have some disjointed thoughts under the cut.
You normally go into these movies worried because hey, the person starring in it is the one that wrote the piece. Often that comes into self insertion, mary sue territory. So they normally end up terrible trainwrecks were you’re rolling your eyes going “oh well it’s pretty obvious you wrote this as the ~character saves the day~ and stuff.”
But what I found was a script that, really, the main character Tommy could have been played by anyone. If it was to show case anything, it would have been skill of the actor himself. Not “I’m the center of the universe. Bow to me, I’m Yuge.”
I’m not saying that he has an ego. He probably does. But this didn’t feel like a project driven by ego like a lot of these films tend to be. It was driven by the want of actually seeing something you wrote being made into film. As someone who produces their own stuff, sometimes you gotta star in your own thing.
I don’t have the best ear when it comes to Japanese, but hearing him thank the cast and crew and it involving tears? He wanted this script to come to life and he probably really wanted it to be successful (hey it was! It actually won awards and critical praise!).
As a script, it was solid. I couldn’t say anything about the dialogue. Even if translated, it is not my native language so I lose a lot of nuance. But as for the act structure and flow, it was solid. The acts were clear. I could follow the story.
There were hiccups and problems. Tommy’s flashbacks could have been shown over time of the car ride instead of just one big exposition dump. The girlfriend character was kind of just there for tension sake when really you got what you needed with Ryuta. His connection with Tommy and watching the fall of their friendship is were the tension lies. Not Tommy’s girlfriend who shows up in one scene were they’re looking at photos that then betrays him and dates Ryuta. I honestly wish we dove more into Morita’s troubles, something a more season writer would probably be able to dive into more.
But these are things I hope Yuge heard and learned when writing his next piece, whatever that maybe. Because I honestly do see some good potential as a writer here. He’s got room to grow but he’s already got a handle on how to write a good movie. I just hope this hasn’t gotten rusty and he’s been writing since 2007.
